“Believe in better” is a phrase that you’ll hear ringing through the halls of ButcherBox a lot these days. Although a seemingly simple slogan, the words string together a deeper meaning and mission for our collective work.
We never rest in striving to bring high-quality, humanely-raised meat to our members each day. We search for new ways to do better by our farmers, the animals, the environment, and our partners.
But most impactful is how our team has brought the believe in better mission beyond the business to try to create a better world for our communities.
This was evident in the spirit each member of the team brings to helping others, whether it’s during our company volunteer day with the Greater Boston Food Bank earlier this fall or the countless other organizations we volunteer at in our spare time.
How We Live Believe in Better
Our team kicked off the season of giving a little early this year with a company-wide trip to the Greater Boston Food Bank in the early fall. At the Food Bank, which aims to end hunger in Eastern Massachusetts, we sorted and packaged more than 10,000 pounds of food, adding up to 8,622 meals for our community.
In early November, we launched an in-house clothing and book drive to support a local nonprofit that has the same start-up spirit at its core as we do at ButcherBox. With the opportunity to support More Than Words, we were able to help a Boston-based social enterprise that empowers young adults who are in the foster care system, court-involved, homeless, or out of school to take charge of their lives by getting first-hand entrepreneurial experience. The donations our team collected ranged from clothes and shoes to books, CDs, DVDs, and video games and went directly to the young adults managing retail stores in their communities, an online marketplace, and other retail businesses.
As we got closer to Thanksgiving, we kicked off our first-ever “Buy One, Give One” turkey promotion. Thanks to our amazing members, who also share our passion to believe in better, we were able to donate several hundred Thanksgiving Turkeys to families in need through local chapters of Feeding America, a nationwide hunger-relief organization.
To go along with our Thanksgiving Turkeys, the team rallied behind our first-ever company-wide Thanksgiving Food Drive. With a bit of friendly competition adding to our aim to do good, we kicked off a two-week-long food drive for The Greater Boston Food Bank in which we were able to collect nearly 500 pounds of Thanksgiving-related foods. Collectively, we were able to get everything from green beans and carrots to pie crusts and pumpkin filling to stuffing and gravy to those unable to afford their own meals this past Thanksgiving.
The Next Phase of Believing in Better
When it comes to giving and supporting those in need, we want to make sure that our “Believe in Better” mission has a lasting impact beyond the holiday season.
We are excited to announce that in January, we’ll be rolling out a new initiative that will not only further help our local communities and causes getting food to the hungry, but also support other causes across the country that exemplify our believe in better mission. We are currently set to begin Our Year of Giving at ButcherBox in 2020—which we will chronicle each year—and have already started building great partnerships and finding new opportunities for our employees to continue to do better in meaningful ways.
We hope you’ll follow along on our journey.
